I was educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, MICA, where I received both a Bachelors and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in painting and printmaking. I also have a second Master of Arts degree from San Diego State University in television production.
In my early career I worked as a painter and college teacher, shifting gears in mid career to work in the video production industry producing and directing documentaries and corporate videos and managing production and post production facilities. Video is a team effort and under my creative leadership we won over ninety national and international awards. Now I’ve returned to my roots as a painter/printmaker exploiting non-traditional tools.
Originally as a painter I worked with traditional media but six years ago I taught myself Photoshop™ and other digital paint software and have never looked back. Coincidentally this happened as the world moved rapidly from film to digital photography. Since I had always worked a lot from my photos as source and as photo silk screens applied to canvas it was a natural transition to start using my digital photography directly as the painting medium. The completed images are computer files that are printed as completed Giclée images on archival papers in editions of usually one hundred fifty.
While my paintings are composed of hundreds of photographic elements and can sometimes at first viewing be mistaken for a single photograph, they are not, as the final images are of nothing that exists in the real world. My style and technique is consistent but the subject matter is not. I explore everything from mythology to dance, from classic landscapes to muscle cars. Lately I’ve been investigating a theme I refer to as forbidden journeys, a reality metaphor where the landscape at first invites you in but then makes it clear that you may not advance through the space without considerable risk. These paintings contain a high level of complexity and require the interested viewer to spend some time with the work.
Historically I have put scant effort into exhibiting, focusing instead on the process of making art itself. Now it’s time to do so and therefore I ask that you review examples of my work on this site for exhibition consideration in your gallery and hopefully to become a member of your stable of artists as well. As a gallery owner I hope you also see the business potential of my art. |
